Thermo Fisher Scientific, a Fortune 100 company and the world's largest supplier of scientific instruments, delivers advanced lab equipment, and software to drive innovation in research and healthcare. I joined the company during COVID, wanting to serve science.

My Role: The design team functions as an internal agency, and I managed client relationships alongside end-to-end design. I led 2–3 projects simultaneously, including this one, and had one supporting designer reporting to me.

Pipettes are among the most commonly used tools in labs.

Scientists use pipettes in the to transport liquid. They work like a syringe, filling and dispensing precise volumes of liquid.

The project scope consists of two parts:

  1. Redesigning the 10-year-old flagship electronic pipette’s embedded software to make it touchscreen-compatible.

  2. Creating a pairing mobile app from 0 to 1.

PART ONE:

There are 100+ user flows and hundreds of embedded screens to design.

I use matrices to maintain pattern consistency and track design interactions.

*Embedded interface designs are still under NDA*

PART TWO:

A brand new mobile app to bridge a gap

Creating multi-step protocols on pipettes is time-consuming due to small screens. While a web app exists, low engagement stems from a difficult pairing process. To solve this, we designed a mobile app with seamless Bluetooth connectivity.

Success in client engament  ✨

I was invited to host a workshop in Helsinki to tackle complex design challenges in person. It was a highly productive collaboration with the Finnish team, leading to a successful outcome and more contracts for our design organization.

Dora is truly open-minded in that she’s willing to listen to our opinions. Sometimes I have concerns with a certain solution but have hard time illustrate my point. Dora can always sense my concern and help me to dig out what I really want to express.

Software engineer

I appreciate that Dora can think of all the use cases ahead, and provide us thorough, straightforward design flows. She’s thought of everything already!

Take aways

  • Persuade stakeholders reluctant to make good design decisions by presenting them with options, including their own ideas.

  • Document the legacy products’ solution, use cases, and all features in a visually friendly way.  When stakeholder asks: “how does the legacy product handles it?”, just show them.

  • Track consistency when changes happen over time. One change can lead to 100 changes in the embedded world.

  • When trying to align requirements across multiple teams, ask for help, and host a  meeting to reach consensus rather then trying to address it yourself.

  • Always listen first before criticizing and ask questions like: is there a reason something is designed a certain way? Be respectful to different perspectives and be kind to other people.
